Song of the Say: Cameo “Word Up”

Straight from the horse’s mouth is best, I think. Today is the day when things that should have been said were not said, but they should have been. Sometimes the spirit rages and froths, but the balls shudder and shrivel.

Alas.

Well, at least we can all seek solace in a song – a really good one, I must say. (Yes, I did deliberately say Song of the Say. What? You got something to say?) “Word Up” has a great beat, a twangy nasal vocal, and a seriously rocking music vid, totally reminiscent of the early, glorious Micho Jacko music vids. The song is slightly heavier from the soul-funk repertoire of 70s band Cameo, initially a 13-member troop. Today, some of them are still performing together, and Tomi Jenkins and Larry Blackmon are in the process of recording a new Cameo album. Other ex-Cameos have gone on to work with Outkast and Big Boi, and John Kellogg has pursued law and academia.

Here’s another FAB-tastic Cameo hit, “Back and Forth”. Guys, this vid is… not subtle.

And this is “Sparkle”, which is surely the godfather of many a 1990s slow, semi-sleazy-cheesy R&B lurve song.

Word up, indeed. Later, y’alls.
