From the album More, this track literally sends shivers down my spine, not only because it’s lovely, but because it reminds me so poignantly of the “alternative” 90s era, where you and me and all those underaged hipsters feasted on a buffet of angsty shoegaze.

The Shivers are – were? – Keith Zarriello and Jo Schornikow. The analogue-obsessed band did go through a series of member switcheroos, with Keith being the mainstay, but for awhile it did seem like Keith and Jo’s pairing was here to stay.

Sadly, they appear to have broken up. Also, their website shows that Keith Zarriello had been raising funds on Kickstarter for his new solo country and folk album (intriguingly worded as “his most hopeful album to date”). As testament to how much they are loved – The Shivers has gained a firm indie following, although commercial success eluded them – Keith’s US$10,000 goal was reached within a month.

Here’s Keith playing the acoustic guitar in what looks like his basement:

Much luck, Keith, but The Shivers is missed. Luckily Youtube has a glorious spread of Shivers goodies, including their friend Deer Tick’s beautiful cover of one of their most moving tracks, “L.I.E.”.
